At Alexa Live 2022, Amazon Alexa announced Skill Quality Coach (SQC), a personalized guide to help skill developers build high-quality skills on Alexa. Here are two videos to help you understand how you can use the Skill Quality Coach to drive customer engagement.

The Skill Quality Coach uses learnings from hundreds of thousands of Alexa skills to identify common attributes of success. Using AI, SQC analyzes your submitted skill based on 120 features and design elements, as well as critical details like locale and category.

The video below provides information on the Skill Quality Coach.

Understanding your Skill Quality Score

The Skill Quality Coach uses learnings from hundreds of thousands of Alexa skills to identify common attributes of success. Using AI, SQC analyzes your submitted skill based on 120 features and design elements, as well as critical details like locale and category. The Skill Quality Coach provides you with a Skill Quality Score (SQS).

[Learn more about the Skill Quality Score in this video]

Ranging from 0-5, the SQS is based on several aspects of skill design. The primary skill design categories that are taken into account to determine your score include:

  • Rich multimodal and voice responses to engage customers.
  • Voice model coverage, featuring a demonstrated ability to redirect requests to the best experiences.
  • Content richness, freshness, and personalization in order to understand customer needs.
  • Endpoint health, consisting of a high response with low latency.

A score from 0-2 means there’s room for improvement. 2-3 signals that you could add more features to enhance usability and functionality. Scores above 3 mean you’re providing an excellent voice experience—bravo!

How the SQC’s recommendations up level your skill

Instead of simply handing developers raw data, the SQC delivers a set of curated tips that take both the design categories listed above and customer experience metrics into account.

By incorporating customer habituation and customer feedback, SQC can also offer insights about how “sticky” a skill is. This analysis sheds a light on when and how frequently customers engage with a skill. In turn, the SQC’s recommendations focus on strategies to help developer drive retention and boost overall skill experience.

Mark Yoshitake, director of the Alexa Skills Kit, said: “After reviewing hundreds of thousands of skills and hundreds of attributes, we bubble up what correlates most. It’s not based only on skills with a huge volume of monthly active users—it considers what actions were taken to get there.”
