Fire Tablet Device Specifications: Overview

Tablet Naming Conventions

Design lines and tablet sizes. Fire tablets have just three design lines, as shown above: Fire HD, Fire, and Fire HDX. Within each design line, there are different tablet sizes. The number in the tablet model, e.g., Fire HD 10 or Fire HD 8, refers to the tablet size (measured diagonally). Fire HD 10 is ten inches, Fire HD 8 is eight inches, and Fire 7 is seven inches.

Generations and release years. Tablets also have a generation in the name. The generation refer to the release year. For example, all tablets released in 2019 are 9 the generation tablets. (Don't confuse the tablet size with the generation. For example, "Fire HD 10" is not the 10th generation.) The following table correlates the generations with the release years.

Release Year Generation
2023 13th Gen
2022 12th Gen
2021 11th Gen
2020 10th Gen
2019 9th Gen
2018 8th Gen
2017 7th Gen
2016 6th Gen
2015 5th Gen
2014 4th Gen
2013 3nd Gen
2012 2nd Gen
2011 1st Gen

Note that unlike with Fire tablets, generations in Fire TV naming conventions follow a linear sequence within design lines and do not map to release years.

Available and discontinued versions. For the most part, the only Fire tablets available are the last few generations. However, all generations are listed here because these specifications are intended for developers to ensure maximum compatibility of their apps with various versions. An older Fire tablet that is no longer available to purchase from Amazon.com might still be used by consumers that have older, discontinued versions.
