Device Setup Service

The device setup service (DSS) is an add-on feature for Alexa Smart Properties (ASP) that simplifies device deployment for your property. You receive your newly-purchased devices pre-configured with the ASP experience. This lets you setup and install devices just by unpacking and plugging in the devices, and the devices are ready to use.

How the device setup service works

To use this service, you must order your devices through your Amazon Business account and set the delivery address to the DSS warehouse. Then you use the ASP console to submit a device setup order via your ASP Console. The device setup order collects configuration details, such as property information, room templates, skill testing phrases, and other relevant information.

The DSS team uses data you provide to configure, test, and label the devices before shipping them to your property. When the devices arrive at the property, they're ready to use immediately, eliminating the need for additional setup and ensuring a seamless deployment process.

Prerequisites

Before you can use the device setup service add-on, you must do the following:

Device procurement

To acquire Alexa devices for your property:

  • Purchase Devices – Use your Amazon Business account to purchase Alexa devices.

  • Shipping Details – Set the shipping address to the DSS warehouse. This is a US address:

    MobilTech Global Services
    4710 Mercantile drive
    Fort Worth, Texas 76137
    Attn: Alexa Smart Properties: <Customer_Name>

  • Bulk Shipping – Opt-in for bulk shipping to a single pallet.

Make a note of the Amazon Business order ID, as you provide this ID when you submit the device setup order.

After configuring the devices, the DSS team ships the devices to your property address, so make sure the property information you provide is correct.

Save Wi-Fi networks to your property

You save details for your Wi-Fi network to the property so that you can add it to the template later. Use the ASP console to save the networks to your property.

  1. Open the Alexa Smart Properties management console and choose the property.
  2. From the Actions menu, click Save Network.
  3. Enter the Network Name (SSID) and select the Network Type.
  4. For networks with the WPAPSK type, also enter the Pre-shared key.
  5. Click Add Network.

For details about saving networks, see Manage Networks in the Management Console.

Create a room template with network details

A room template contains settings, Wi-Fi network names, skill enablements, and other information that you can apply to the registered devices in your property rooms. To use the device setup service, you create a room template with the device settings you want for the new devices. The service applies this template to your devices before shipping them to you.

Your template must include the Wi-Fi networks for your devices. Save your networks to your property as described in Save Wi-Fi networks to your property, earlier.

Set up a template for the device setup service

  1. Create a new room template. For details, see Create a room template.

Configure the template with the settings you want to apply to all the devices.

  2. In the Network Settings pane for the template, select the Wi-Fi Networks you previously saved to the property.

Prepare and submit the device setup order

To complete the device setup order, you fill in the following information about your property.

  • Amazon Order ID – Provide the Amazon Business order ID.
  • Device Type – Specify the device type. If the property requires multiple device types, such as Echo Show 8, Echo Show 15, or Echo Show 21, include this information in the room mapping CSV file.
  • Number of Devices – Indicate the number of devices needed for the property. If the Amazon order ID contains more devices than required for this property, notify your Amazon contact.
  • Property Name – This field is automatically populated when you navigate to the submit setup order section for a specific property. The property name can't be edited.
  • Property Address – This field is automatically populated based on the selected property. The DSS team ships the configured devices to this address.
  • Room Mapping – Upload a comma separated values (CSV) file that specifies room number or name (e.g., Room #212), unit ID, device type (e.g., Echo Show 8), and device count. A sample CSV file is available for download on the Setup Order page for reference. The file must have the following fields:
    • room_name
    • unit_id
    • device_type
    • device_count
  • Labels – The DSS team uses a default layout for room number labels on the devices and boxes, as indicated in the example files. If you prefer custom labels, ship them to the DSS warehouse address.
  • Printouts – If collateral printouts are needed, the DSS team prints and packs them in the shipping box. Provide a digital copy of the collateral in PDF, PNG, or JPG format. These printouts might include instructions for using the device, answers to common questions, and other relevant information for guests or residents. The printouts must adhere to the applicable Policies for Alexa Smart Properties.
  • Room Template – Select the Room Template created in earlier steps. This template includes device settings, such as Wi-Fi information, applicable to this property.
  • Testing Instructions – Provide Alexa utterance testing instructions. The Device Setup team uses these phrases to validate responses before shipping the devices to your property.
