In the competitive gaming industry, developers are constantly seeking innovative ways to expand their reach, increase revenue, and offer an exceptional gaming experience. Smilegate Megaport, the mobile branch of the South Korean game developer Smilegate, set out to reach these objectives with their flagship mobile-based game, Epic Seven. In collaboration with Amazon Appstore, they achieved cross-device goals, reached untapped users, and enhanced the gaming experience–all while captivating a worldwide audience.
While Smilegate Megaport’s Epic Seven enjoyed success in the mobile gaming world, they saw an untapped opportunity in the world of PC gaming. They were challenged to expand their reach, increase revenue, and deliver an immersive gaming experience with Epic Seven. With Amazon Appstore’s developer tools, Smilegate Megaport was able to save hundreds of hours of development time by launching Epic Seven for Fire OS directly on Windows 11. Thanks to thorough in-house QA and Amazon's pre-submission Live App testing (LAT) service, they delivered a fluid and responsive gaming experience for both tablets and PCs.
Broadened reach with Amazon Appstore on Windows 11
Seeking an avenue to reach more customers, Smilegate Megaport turned to Amazon Appstore for Windows 11. When asked about the strategy to launch Epic Seven on Windows 11, Daniel Kim, Head of Smilegate Megaport US, said, “We saw an opportunity to not only give our mobile players more choice, but also to reach additional gamers who prefer to play on PC. Working with Amazon Appstore enabled us to fill this gap.” This app distribution partnership provided them with the tools and support necessary to overcome their business challenges. Epic Seven's presence on Windows 11 drew a global audience, enabling the game to flourish in previously untapped audiences.
Increased revenue with the Appstore SDK
Amazon Appstore provided Smilegate Megaport with a robust monetization framework through the Appstore SDK. This allowed them to establish effective and diverse strategies to generate in-app revenue.
“Amazon Appstore players have shown higher retention rates compared to other app stores,” said Kim. “It helps us generate an additional revenue source and expand our user base in many regions."
Additionally, the in-app purchases of digital goods—like skills and game weapons—along with subscription offerings—not only significantly enhance the gaming experience but drove additional revenue streams.
Delivering an immersive gaming experience
The launch of Epic Seven on the Amazon Appstore resulted in an increase in gameplay for Epic Seven players, offering them the opportunity to customize their gaming controls. Amazon Appstore's simple sign-in integration allowed players to log in effortlessly and synchronize their progress across devices. In addition, Smilegate used the A3L Messaging SDK for Android and Fire Device notifications. This convenience encouraged longer play sessions on both tablets and Windows 11.
Smilegate Megaport worked closely with Amazon Appstore to ensure optimal performance on various devices and network environments. “When it comes to input controls, we set the default controls based on the device form factor," says Kim. "Amazon Appstore's compatibility with different input controls provides our players with the flexibility to choose their preferred gaming setup." These game control enhancements improve accessibility and user satisfaction.
Smilegate’s experience with scaling Epic Seven’s success with Amazon Appstore has set a promising precedent for the game developer’s future games. “We launched "Outerplane" globally on May 22nd PDT which is another turn-based RPG built with Unity 3D and have another new game, “Wonderers: Eternal World" which will be our first cross-platform title on both PC and mobile,” said Daniel.
