Alexa for Lights & Switches

Connecting Lights & Switches to Alexa

With Alexa, you can create voice-first experiences that provide a more intuitive way to interact with lights and switches. We provide a range of hardware and software tools, so you can choose the implementation that supports your product line and customer experience needs – from building Alexa directly into your device so customers can talk to Alexa, to an Amazon-managed hardware module and cloud service, to APIs that can connect your device control cloud to Alexa.

What You Can Build

Connect Locally Using Zigbee

If you build lights or in-wall switches with Zigbee and certify with the Zigbee Alliance, you can easily add voice control with Alexa, and reach and delight more customers.

The new Echo Show and Echo Plus include a built-in hub that seamlessly connects and controls Zigbee smart devices such as light bulbs, door locks, switches, sensors, and plugs, without the need for separate hubs or apps.

Connect Your Cloud to Alexa

If you connect to Alexa using your own device control cloud, you’ll need to design a smart home skill. Using the Smart Home Skill API, you can use Alexa’s native smart home voice user interface, or VUI, which makes your development easier, and makes adoption easier for customers.

Connect Directly with the Alexa Connect Kit

The Alexa Connect Kit, or ACK, is a new way for device makers to connect devices to Alexa without worrying about managing cloud services or complex networking and security firmware. Instead of the ongoing variable cost of running cloud services, with ACK you pay a low, upfront, fixed cost for the lifetime of the device.

Build Alexa Into Your Device

Alexa Built-in is a category of products with a speaker and microphone with Alexa integrated directly. You can talk to the device with the wake word “Alexa,” and receive voice responses and content instantly. You can develop your own Alexa Built-in light or switch using the Alexa Voice Service (AVS), with the support of AVS APIs, hardware kits, software tools, and documentation.
