Step 3: Commission and Test the Device


In this step, you commission the device into a Matter network that includes a Matter-enabled Amazon Echo. Commissioning uses the credentials you provisioned in the last step to establish the authenticity of the device. After the device joins the Matter network, you can use voice and the Alexa app to test the lighting features of the sample app.

Prerequisites

Before you start, make sure that you have the following items:

  • Alexa app on a mobile device.
  • In Settings on your mobile device, allow the Alexa app to access the camera.
  • Matter-compatible Amazon Echo device. For a list of devices, see Compatible Echo and eero devices.
  • Connect the Echo device to the same Amazon developer account as the Alexa app.
  • Connect the Echo device to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
  • Connect the development kit to a USB port on your host machine.

Steps to commission and test the device

Complete the following steps to commission the device to the Matter network and test the smart-light features in the Alexa app.

  1. Commission the device.
  2. Test with the Alexa app.

Step 3.1: Commission the device

Using the Alexa app, you commission the device to the Matter network using Wi-Fi over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). Make sure that you sign in to the Alexa app with your Amazon developer account.

To add your ACK-based device to the Alexa app

  1. On your mobile device, open the Alexa app.
  2. On the Alexa app, navigate to the Devices page, and then tap the plus sign (+).
  3. Tap Add Device, and then from list of devices, select Other.
  4. For Which logo is on your device?, tap Matter, and then for Does your device have a Matter logo, tap Yes.
  5. For Is your device powered on?, tap Yes.
  6. Connect your host machine to the development kit.

  7. To get the QR code for the setup, enter the following command in a terminal window.
    The command displays a QR code link similar to Sample QR.

  1. Click the link to the QR code.
  2. In the Alexa app, tap Scan QR Code.
  3. For Allow permission, tap Allow for access to the camera, and then scan the QR code with your camera.
  4. If you see This device isn't Matter compatible, that's OK. For Do you want to set up this device anyway?, tap Yes.
  5. For Connect device to Wi-Fi, select your Wi-Fi network, and then tap Next.
  6. For Device setup and ready to use, tap Done.
    Alexa indicates that the setup succeeded.

Step 3.2: Test with Alexa

You can test the device controls by voice and in the Alexa app.

To test device controls

  1. Use the Alexa app to control your prototype device, navigate to Devices, and then tap First light.
  2. To test the light, use the controls to toggle the power, change the brightness, and control the color.
  3. To test the light with voice, state the following utterances to Alexa on your Echo device:

Alexa, turn on the first light.
Alexa, turn off the first light.

Alexa, brighten the first light to seventy five percent.
Alexa, dim the first light to twenty five percent.
Alexa, set the first light to fifty percent.

Alexa, set the first light to green.
Alexa, change the first light to the color blue.
