Connecting Your Camera to Alexa

Smart Home Cameras

Your customers can ask Alexa to view live video feeds from your WiFi and wired smart home cameras on Echo Show, Echo Spot, and FireTV. Using the Smart Home Skill API, you can specify a variety of camera stream attributes, including protocol, resolution, authorization type, and codecs. A smart home skill that works with cloud-enabled cameras enables a customer to say, "Alexa, show me the front door camera" and the customer is then shown a video feed from that camera in their Alexa-enabled device that supports video streaming. In addition, you can optionally support camera history so that a customer can ask to view a past recording.

Spotlight: Arlo Voice-Enables its Smart Cameras

Arlo by NETGEAR produces a line of smart security cameras with a mission in mind: to help customers protect what matters most. These weatherproof, wire-free, smart HD security cameras deliver live feeds that customers can access on their computer, tablet, smartphone, and on Echo Show and Echo Spot.

By integrating with Alexa, Arlo could enable its customers to access any video feed by voice—even when their hands are full. Arlo customers could simply say, “Alexa, show me the front door” or “Alexa, show me the baby’s room” to see a live feed of their camera on Echo Show and Echo Spot.

To enable this frictionless customer experience, the Arlo team built a skill for Alexa using the camera capabilities in the Smart Home Skill API. By leveraging the Smart Home Skill API in the Alexa Skills Kit, Arlo delivered a faster, easier, and more delightful experience to its customers.
