Update a Published Cloud Streaming App
Updates to your cloud streaming app happen as part of your standard Fire OS APK update process. To update your published cloud streaming app or add new features, submit a new version of your app binary through the app submission workflow. Your app retains customer ratings and download statistics across versions.
Things to keep in mind
- Apps cannot be updated while they are in the Amazon review process.
- The option to update a cloud streaming app is only available for ASINs that are already enrolled in the Amazon Cloud App Program. You do not have the ability to add this to new ASINs or existing ASINs that are not already enrolled in the Amazon Cloud App Program.
- When targeting an updated APK or Android App Bundle for cloud app streaming, you must target at least one Vega OS Fire TV device and the reference Fire TV Stick 4K Max device.
- You can have multiple APKs or Android App Bundles per ASIN. For example, one that targets Fire TV Stick 4K Max and a Vega OS Fire TV device, and another that targets other devices.
- If you submit an app update that does not include an APK or Android App Bundle targeted for a Vega OS Fire TV device, your app will be suppressed from the Appstore on Vega OS Fire TV devices. You can restore it by creating another app version on that ASIN that does target a Vega OS Fire TV device.
- If you submit an app with staged rollout, that staging applies to all binaries. The app will not propagate to Amazon cloud app streaming until the new version is fully dialed up through staged rollout on other devices.
- You can update app assets without requiring a full new version, follow the steps in Live metadata update.
- Temporarily suppressing an Amazon cloud streamed app from Vega OS Fire TV devices by submitting an update that does not target a Vega OS Fire TV device is not the same as removing the device from Amazon cloud app streaming altogether. Suppression prevents new users from discovering and installing the app. Suppression can be reversed by publishing an app update that targets a Vega OS Fire TV device. Removal will un-enroll the ASIN from the Cloud App Program and cannot be reversed by the developer. If this does happen by mistake, reach out to Developer Support with Cloud App Program category and Functional Issues subject to ask to have your app restored.
- If your updated APK or Android App Bundle triggers a forced update warning on a previous installed version, please be sure to provide at least 2 weeks until the forced update goes into effect to ensure that the new app update has ample time to propagate to Amazon cloud app streaming. Such warnings in cloud streamed apps are unactionable by the end customer and could temporarily block your app from being usable through cloud app streaming.
Update an existing app
- Go to the Developer Console dashboard.
- In the Amazon Appstore section, click App List.
- From your app(s) already on Amazon cloud app streaming, select the one you want to update.
-
Click Add Upcoming Version and Confirm.
Your app existing binaries and metadata are copied into the Upcoming Version.
- Click Upload your app file or drag and drop to upload the replacement APK or Android App Bundle.
- Click Target your app.
- From the tabs in the center, select Edit supported devices.
- Inspect the Amazon Fire TV category and confirm that a Vega OS Fire TV device is selected. If not, please select Fire TV 4K Max and then select a Vega OS Fire TV device. A Vega OS Fire TV device will only be available if Fire TV 4K Max is selected first and remains selected. Click Save.
- Update availability and other metadata, and then click Save.
- On the Review & Submit screen, verify the updates, and then click Submit App.
After you click Submit App, the app goes into a review state. When the app passes review, you are notified and the app is published in the Appstore for FOS devices first. When the app is published to cloud streaming, you receive a second notification.
Only after the second notification, you can proceed with announcing the update to your users.
Perform a live metadata update
You can perform a live metadata update when you want to update only the description or other assets and don't have a new binary file to publish. You don't need to create a new upcoming version of your app for these changes, but the Appstore must approve these updates before they are published on the Appstore. Use these steps to perform a live metadata update.
- Go to the Developer Console dashboard.
- In the Amazon Appstore section, click App List.
- Select the app you want to update.
- Edit the descriptions, images, or other assets as needed. For details on the app submission screens, see Submitting Apps to the Amazon Appstore.
Note: Certain fields on the app submission screens can't be updated for an already live app. This includes the binary file, supported languages, supported devices, target audience, and content rating. If you need to make updates to these fields, you must submit a new version of your app, as detailed in Update an existing app.
- On the Review & Submit screen, verify the updates, and then click Submit App.
After you click Submit App, the app goes into a review state. While the metadata update is under review, the app remains available for download on the Appstore with its existing metadata. The time it takes to complete the review process depends on the metadata changes, but it's shorter than updates that include a binary file. For example, updates that require manual verification or content policy review are likely to take longer than those that don't.
The Developer Console displays a banner at the top of the app submission screens after your app updates are live.
You can stage changes that you aren't ready to submit for publishing by making the changes and allowing the console to auto-save those changes. The saved changes won't be published until after you click Submit App and the update is approved.
