Fire Tablet Device Specifications: Overview
This page provides Fire tablet device specifications for all models. The specifications provide more detail than the product pages on Amazon.com, as they're intended for developers building apps rather than for consumers. The Fire tablet device family includes the following types of devices.
Tablet Naming Conventions
Design lines and tablet sizes. Fire tablets have just three design lines, as shown previously: Fire HD, Fire, and Fire HDX. Within each design line, there are different tablet sizes. The number in the tablet model, for example, Fire HD 10 or Fire HD 8, refers to the tablet size (measured diagonally). Fire HD 10 is ten inches, Fire HD 8 is eight inches, and Fire 7 is seven inches.
Generations and release years. Tablets also have a generation in the name. The generation refers to the release year. For example, all tablets released in 2019 are 9 the generation tablets. (Don't confuse the tablet size with the generation. For example, "Fire HD 10" is not the 10th generation.) The following table correlates the generations with the release years.
Release Year | Generation |
---|---|
2023 | 13th Gen |
2022 | 12th Gen |
2021 | 11th Gen |
2020 | 10th Gen |
2019 | 9th Gen |
2018 | 8th Gen |
2017 | 7th Gen |
2016 | 6th Gen |
2015 | 5th Gen |
2014 | 4th Gen |
2013 | 3nd Gen |
2012 | 2nd Gen |
2011 | 1st Gen |
Unlike with Fire tablets, generations in Fire TV naming conventions follow a linear sequence within design lines and do not map to release years.
Available and discontinued versions. For the most part, the only Fire tablets available are the last few generations. However, you can find all generations here because these specifications help developers to make sure that they have maximum compatibility of their apps with various versions. Consumers might still use older, discontinued versions of the Fire tablet that is no longer available to purchase from Amazon.com.
