Updates to your cloud streaming app happen as part of your standard Fire OS APK update process. To update your published cloud streaming app or add new features, submit a new version of your app binary through the app submission workflow. Your app retains customer ratings and download statistics across versions. You can only update cloud streaming apps for ASINs already enrolled in the Amazon Cloud App Program. You can’t add cloud streaming to new ASINs or existing ASINs not enrolled in the program. You can’t update apps during the Amazon review process.

Update an existing app

When you update an existing app, you can use multiple APKs or Android App Bundles per ASIN. For example, you can add a binary that targets the Fire TV Stick 4K Max and a Vega OS Fire TV device (such as the Fire TV Stick 4K Select), and another binary that targets other devices. To update your app
  1. Sign in to the Developer Console.
  2. From the navigation bar, choose My Apps.
  3. Find and open the Fire OS app that’s enrolled in the Amazon Cloud App Program.
  4. In the sidebar, choose Add Upcoming Version.
  5. Select Confirm on the confirmation message that appears. The system copies your app’s existing binaries and metadata into the Upcoming Version section.
  6. On the Upload your app file screen, select the Upload your app file box to open the file picker, or drag and drop your replacement binary file to the box.
  7. On the sidebar, select Target your app.
  8. Select Edit supported devices and then choose the Amazon Fire TV tab.
  9. In the Amazon Vega TV section, confirm that a Vega OS Fire TV device is selected. If no Vega OS devices are selected, select Fire TV Stick 4K Max in the Amazon Fire TV section, and then select a device in the Amazon Vega TV section. A Vega OS Fire TV device is only available if Fire TV Stick 4K Max is selected first and remains selected. Select Save.
  10. Update availability and other metadata, and choose Save when done.
  11. On the Review & Submit screen, verify the updates, and then choose Submit App. If you submit an app with a staged rollout, that staging applies to all binaries. The app does not propagate to Amazon cloud app streaming until the new version is 100% released through staged rollout on other devices.
After you submit, the app goes into a review state. When the app passes review, you receive a notification and the app publishes in the Appstore for Fire OS devices first. When the app publishes to cloud streaming, you receive a second notification. Wait until after you receive the second notification before announcing the update to your users. App updates on the Cloud App Program can take up to five business days from the time of submission to the time they’re available in Appstore as a cloud-streamed app. Wait at least two weeks before triggering any force update warnings in your updated APK to make sure the new app update has enough time to propagate to Amazon cloud app streaming. Users can’t act on force update warnings in cloud streamed apps, so receiving one could temporarily block users from accessing your cloud-streamed app.

Temporarily suppress your cloud streaming app

To temporarily suppress your cloud streaming app on the Amazon Appstore on Vega OS Fire TV devices, submit an app update that doesn’t target any Vega OS devices. This action is different from removing the device from Amazon cloud app streaming altogether. The differences between temporary suppression and app removal are as follows:
  • Temporary suppression prevents new users from discovering and installing the app. You can reverse suppression by publishing an app update that targets a Vega OS Fire TV device.
  • Removal unenrolls the ASIN from the Cloud App Program. You can’t reverse this action.

Perform a live metadata update

You can perform a live metadata update when you want to update only the description or other assets and don’t have a new binary file to publish. You don’t need to create a new upcoming version of your app for these changes, but the Appstore must approve the updates before publishing them. To perform a live metadata update
  1. Sign in to the Developer Console.
  2. From the navigation bar, choose My Apps.
  3. Find and open the app listing you want to update.
  4. Edit the descriptions, images, or other assets as needed. For details on the app submission screens, see Submit Your App to the Amazon Appstore.
  5. On the Review & Submit screen, verify the updates, and then select Submit App.
After you submit, the app goes into a review state. The app remains available for download on the Appstore with its existing metadata during the review. The time it takes to complete the review process depends on the metadata changes, but it’s shorter than updates that include a binary file. For example, updates that require manual verification or content policy review are likely to take longer. The Developer Console displays a banner at the top of the app submission screens after your app updates are live. You can stage changes that you aren’t ready to submit for publishing by making the changes and letting the console auto-save them. The saved changes aren’t published until you select Submit App and the update passes approval.

Migrate your app from Amazon cloud app streaming to a Vega OS version

If you’ve built a Vega OS version of your app, you can migrate away from cloud app streaming. After migration, Amazon replaces the mini app on users’ devices with your full Vega OS app through an app update. For migration steps, see Migrate from Cloud Streaming to Vega OS.
