Ratings and reviews directly impact discovery and downloads for your apps and games. Not only do they provide a quick snapshot to potential users about how awesome—or not—your app is, they also play an important role in how your app ranks.
Apps with higher ratings paired with a larger volume of reviews lead to higher rankings. And, apps with positive ratings are more likely to be downloaded than those with lower ratings. In fact, a survey by Apptentive found that 96 percent of potential users are willing to download an app with a 4-star rating, and only 15 percent of potential users are willing to download an app with a 2-star rating.
While it may seem that negative reviews are bad for business, even worse is no reviews at all.
Since the number of ratings and reviews play such an important role in discoverability, it is best to encourage user feedback right at launch. Rather than wait for that first anonymous review based on a user’s first impression, consider asking people within your trusted network to submit an honest review.
If you previously used beta testers who already know their way around your app, ask if they are willing to submit a review.
Another good source for reviews is industry peers whose opinions you trust. For example, enlist the support of professionals who have developed similar apps or are considered experts on your app’s content.
Transforming bad ratings and reviews into positive ones takes time and consistent attention. The quicker you respond to user feedback and make updates to your app, the happier your users will be.
Sometimes the issue is not just about reactively updating your app to boost your app’s ratings. Quality app content also can stimulate positive reviews.
Finally, try to identify key instances of user delight in your app. These make the perfect moment to ask for feedback. For example, in a mobile game, ask users review your app after they have completed a difficult level or unlocked a hidden treasure.
Of course, the best way to ensure that your app is positively received is to make sure you conduct all of the important tests prior to launch.
