Setting Up Your Test Environment

When performing acoustic self-testing for your Alexa Voice Service (AVS) device, an important characteristic of your acoustic test environment is strong sound isolation from external noise sources to create reproducible results given identical test parameters. This page helps you create a room setup that reproduces the environment that Amazon uses, which is an ETSI-compliant audio facility.

Test room configuration

In your test area, clear a 180-degree field of view for 2.75m in front the Device Under Test (DUT), except for the two speakers for testing, if applicable.

When conducting acoustic self-testing, move the single Speech Speaker to each of the four locations. The Noise Speaker remains in one location. Note that the speaker locations 0.9m from the DUT (locations 4 and 5) apply to near-field testing only.

Download the test setup and configuration instructions

To learn where to place your device for testing, download and follow the AVS Test Setup and Configuration instructions from the Resources tab of the Amazon developer portal. To access the instructions, log in to the Amazon developer portal with your whitelisted Amazon developer credentials:

If you can't access the document, contact your Amazon Business Development contact and ask to be whitelisted.

Position the DUT and speaker

  1. Place the DUT at an elevation where a user would typically position it.
  2. On the SPL tab of the Scoresheet, enter the elevation of the DUT.
  3. If the DUT doesn't have a distinct "front" orientation for its microphone array, skip to step 4. If he DUT does have a distinct "front" orientation for its microphone array:
    • Aim the front of the DUT toward "Speech Speaker Location 4". (Don't change the orientation of the DUT, regardless of where you move the Speech Speaker for other tests.)
    • On the Information tab of the Scoresheet, describe the DUT orientation under the table.
  4. Make sure that the DUT has a clear 180-degree field of view for 2.75m. Don't place any laptops, tables, or chairs inside of that clear view, except possibly the Speech Speaker and Noise Speakers.
  5. Elevate the Speech Speaker on its stand so that the center of the speaker cone is at the elevation of the DUT. Use the same elevation for all Speech Speaker locations.
  6. On the SPL tab of the Scoresheet, enter the elevation of the center of the Speech Speaker cone. If the elevation differs from the elevation of the DUT, explain the reason under the table in the SPL tab.
  7. For "Location 4" of the Speech Speaker, mark the location as follows:
    • Position the base of the Speech Speaker stand so that the face of the speaker cone is the correct distance from the center of the DUT microphone array.
    • Use masking tape to mark the location of the stand to help keep its position consistent throughout testing.
  8. Position and mark the stand location for the Speech Speaker in locations 2, 3, and 5. Use the distances and angles shown in the diagrams.
  9. Return the Speech Speaker to location 4 before further configuration or tests.

Position the noise speaker

Place the Noise Speaker a single static location (Location 1) and orientation for every test:

  • Orient the Noise Speaker to direct its sound across the center path of the DUT.
  • Set the center of the Noise Speaker cone to an elevation of 1m.

Connect and testing laptops and speakers

Noise Laptop:

  1. Verify that the Noise Laptop has the FAR Test folder, stationary noise sound, and music playlist specified in Audio source files.
  2. Connect the Noise Laptop and the Noise Speaker with an audio cable.
  3. Make sure that you're able to play any of the audio files from the Noise Laptop, including the "Happy" song described in Set up your Amazon Music account.

Speech Laptop:

  1. Verify the Speech Laptop has the FRR_RAR_utterances, WWDD_utterances, and MobileTest folders, if applicable.
  2. Connect the Speech Laptop and the Noise Speaker with an audio cable.
  3. Make sure that you're able to play any of the audio files from the Speech Laptop.

Position the Echo Dot

Position the Echo Dot in the same location where you placed the DUT for its tests. If the Echo Dot needs any special mounting or stand, determine what other equipment you might need before swapping out the DUT and Echo Dot between tests.

After you position the Echo Dot, move the DUT back to its original location before performing more tests, unless you're performing the FAR test, which tests both the DUT and Echo Dot simultaneously. Position the two devices next to each other for the FAR test.
