Amazon Underground allows developers to monetize 100% of the customers using their apps or games. Because apps and games are Actually Free on Underground, including in-app purchases, all customers need to do is download and start playing. Developers are paid by Amazon for every single minute their app is used by customers—rewarding player engagement and retention, rather than monetization effectiveness.
Rovio published Angry Birds Rio, Angry Birds Slingshot Stella, Angry Birds Space and Bad Piggies on Amazon Underground, and is already seeing the benefits the Underground programme can offer. These four popular titles are completely free to customers and include access to all game content, free power-ups and more—and the increased engagement tripled Rovio’s revenues for these titles in just the first 30 days since launch.
Here’s what Tero Raji, SVP of Game Business at Rovio, reported about their strategy on Underground:
“We included four of our popular titles in Amazon Underground at launch, aimed at reaching as many fans as possible in the Amazon ecosystem.”
“In the first month since launch of these games, the Amazon Underground model has brought us up to three times more revenue compared to the same games’ user revenue in the Amazon Appstore previously.”
