Getting started

Fire OS 7 is our Android-based operating system that powers Amazon Fire TV. Fire OS 7 is based on Android 9 (Pie) and API level 28, making it more compatible with existing Android apps than ever before. Developing for Fire OS 7 means that even more of your apps should work on Amazon Fire devices with no additional engineering effort.

Develop for voice on Fire TV

Customers are increasingly using voice interfaces as a hands-free way to manage their lives. And, Alexa is always getting smarter: Now customers can simply ask Alexa to play a favorite show, launch an app, or control playback, all without having to pick up the remote.

Integrating Alexa into your apps allows your customers to easily find, consume, and control video content using just their voice. You can now reach customers on more than 100 million Alexa-enabled devices like Echo Show and Amazon Fire TV, allowing them to simply “ask” for your content. Learn how to integrate voice into your Fire TV app.

Fire OS 7

Fire OS is the operating system that runs Amazon Fire TV and tablet devices. Fire OS is a fork of Android, so if your app runs on Android, it will most likely run on Amazon Fire devices too. Just as there are multiple Android versions, there are also multiple Fire OS versions. The latest version is Fire OS 7, which is based on Android 9 Pie (API level 28). Fire OS 6 is based on Android 7.1 (API level 25), and Fire OS 5 is based on Android 5.1 (API level 22).

Simply drag and drop your Android APK into the App Testing Service and get compatibility results in 90 seconds or less. We try to keep parity with Android development practices as much as possible, reducing any learning curve for the Amazon Appstore.
